How to back up OpenElec full SD card image
I've received as a present with my Wetek one "original" SD card with OpenElec on it. Version is, if I am not wrong, 5.00.5 or something. Recently I decided to upgrade the openelec to the new 5.95.5.
I've made a backup as it was described here and I've also looked on how to install a full fresh openelect. This combination plus the restore of the backup from the original image should do the trick to a smooth update, but I've also thought what can I do if I want to use the same SD Card on which I have Openelec right now. This would mean that I would loose the "original" Openelec. For the sake of backup, but also because I am happy with the stability of this original version I would like to have a back door to be able to go fully back to the older version.
This seems to be pretty easy and all you need to do is to use the same Win32 Disk Imager in "reverse".
Link for the utility is here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/
Prequisites:
1. SD card with openelec on it
2. Computer with SD card reader and similar space available as the size of the SD Card (this would be a max requirement as image is usually smaller than the size of the card, unless you've filled it with local media)
3. Win 32 Disk Imager - http://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/
Process:
1. download and install Win32 Disk Imager (wizzard is very simple. the only option that I can stress on is "place an icon on desktop" for easing the access to the app.)
2. insert your sd card reader on the computer
3. open Win32 and:
3.1. in the Image File option (1 in the below image) select the path of the to be image. Choose a name of the file and use .img as extension
3.2. in the Device option (2 in the below image) select the drive of the SD Card
3.3. Choose Read option (3 in the below image) in order to start the operation

At the end of the operation you will have your image saved on the hard disk and you will be able to revert to it using this tutorial http://wetekforums.com/vb5/forum/wetek-play/linux/openelec/tutorials-aa/148-tutorial-how-to-install-linux-xbmc-or-openelec-on-micro-sd
Next steps have a fork:
1. You can proceed further to install fresh new openelec using the same mentioned tutorial: http://wetekforums.com/vb5/forum/wetek-play/linux/openelec/tutorials-aa/148-tutorial-how-to-install-linux-xbmc-or-openelec-on-micro-sd
2. you can proceed to update using this tutorial: http://wetekforums.com/vb5/forum/wetek-play/linux/openelec/tutorials-aa/190-tutorial-howto-update-with-winscp
hope it helps

Great tutorial thanks. I know this may be inactive due to date posted, but does anybody know how I could backup a 64GB SD card, (which only has around 4GB data used). And then transfer the image to a smaller 16GB SD card? Is this possible?
When I try to create an image of my SD card using the above method, the image captured will be the full card size of 64GB and won't fit onto a smaller SD card.
Thanks
